Memoir vs. Message-Driven Book: Which One Should You Write?

When God stirs your heart to write a book, one of the first questions you might ask is:
“Should I tell my story… or share the message?”
Both a memoir and a message-driven book can be powerful vessels of purpose. But understanding the difference—and what you’re truly called to write—can bring clarity to your writing journey.
Let’s explore the two and help you discern which one God might be calling you to write.
What Is a Memoir?
A memoir is a window into your life. It’s deeply personal and often follows a specific chapter or theme from your journey. It’s not about telling your entire life story (that’s an autobiography), but about capturing part of it in a way that reveals meaning, growth, and transformation.
A memoir says: “Here’s what I’ve lived through, and here’s what I’ve learned.”
Examples of memoir themes:
- A season of grief and healing
- A journey of overcoming addiction
- Lessons from a career, calling, or crisis
- A personal walk with God during hardship
What Is a Message-Driven Book?
A message-driven book focuses less on your story and more on helping the reader with their journey. Your story might be woven in—but it serves the message, not the other way around.
These books are often how-to, devotional, transformational, or teaching in nature.
A message-driven book says: “Here’s what God has taught me, and how it might help you too.”
Examples of message-driven books:
- “10 Biblical Principles for a More Intentional Life”
- “Finding Peace After Divorce”
- “Faith Over Fear: A 30-Day Devotional”
- “God’s Blueprint for Bold Living”
So… Which One Should You Write?
Here are a few ways to discern what’s right for you:
1. Is your story the message? → Memoir
If God has done something so personal and powerful in your life that sharing it as it happened is the message itself, a memoir might be what you’re called to write.
Ask yourself: Would someone find healing or hope simply by walking through this experience with me?
2. Do you want to equip or teach? → Message-Driven Book
If your desire is to guide others through a process, offer solutions, or unpack a truth that changed your life, then a message-driven book is likely your path.
Ask yourself: Is my focus more on helping others apply the truth than sharing my own journey in full detail?
3. Are you still healing? → Wait or blend with care
If the wounds are still raw, writing a memoir could be therapeutic—but also tender. Sometimes, a message-driven book with pieces of your story is a safer and more purposeful way to begin.
Reminder: You don’t have to tell everything to make a big impact.
4. Do people constantly ask you how you did it?
If people keep saying, “How did you get through that?” or “You should write a book!”—God might be prompting you to turn your personal experience into either a memoir or a message, depending on what’s needed most.
You’re Not Just Writing a Book—You’re Obeying a Call
Whether you write your memoir or craft a message-driven book, your “yes” matters. One is not better than the other. It’s about what God wants to do through your words.
You don’t need to have it all figured out—you just need to start.
Final Thought:
A memoir connects.
A message-driven book equips.
Both can transform.
So ask Him, reflect, and take that next faithful step.
You’ve got a message the world needs—whether it’s found in your story or your strength.
